Become a Coach
Coaches play an important part in the success of our programming each season. NYB aims to provide the highest quality coaching for our players and is committed to helping our coaches develop through coaching clinics, resource sharing and mentorship.
Tryout Process
Prospective coaches start the process by completing a coaching application each season. The applications are different for first-time coaches versus returning coaches. After submitting an application, prospective coaches will interview with members of the NYB board to discuss their coaching philosophies, coaching experience and basketball acumen. After the interview process, the NYB board reviews candidates and selects a head coach for the coming season.
Coaches are required to agree to the Coaches’ Code of Conduct and attend pre-season coaching clinics. In additional coaches must complete CORI/SORI forms, acknowledge our sexual abuse policy and complete CDC concussion training before the start of the season.
People interested in coaching should send completed application forms to coaching@natickyouthbasketball.org
Code of Conduct
Each coach will ensure that his/her coaching conduct and communications with referees, spectators and game officials is reflective of the ideals established herein. To satisfactorily meet these responsibilities, the coach is expected to:
- Know the rules and abide by them.
- Instruct team members in the rules and coach his/her team in such a way as to motivate each player to compete according to the rules at all times.
- Respect the game officials and refrain from questioning their decisions in a disrespectful or abusive manner.
Ensure that the players and spectators follow all building rules and regulations. - Ensure that fans of his/her team conduct themselves with sportsmanship and maturity at all times while in attendance at game sites; assist the game officials in maintaining control of spectators during the games.
- Respect the coaches and players of the opposing team both during the play of the game and at its conclusion, win or lose.
- Teach each player, especially through personal example, to be humble and generous in victory and proud in defeat.
- Maintain control of his/her emotions and avoid actions, language, and/or gestures that may be interpreted as hostile and humiliating.
- Instruct team support personnel (e.g., assistant coaches, scorekeepers, and timekeepers) in their responsibilities in accordance with established rules and procedures.
- Realize, accept, and practice the principal that a team’s reputation is built not only on its playing ability, but also on its sportsmanship, courtesy, and manner.
- Provide your team with a first aid kit that will be adequate to deal with expected sports injuries.

🏀 Boys 8C – Built for the Moment 🏀
This 8C team didn’t just have a season… they built a run.
Finishing 6–5 in league play, this group kept growing, competing, and believing—and when the playoffs hit, they flipped the switch.
With three straight playoff wins, the boys battled their way all the way to the D6 Championship Game. And in a hard-fought final against Swansea, they left everything on the court, coming up just short in a narrow, down-to-the-wire loss.
But this season was about so much more than one game.
As Coach Dave F shared:
“This season was never just about the scoreboard.
From day one, we chose a different definition of winning: effort every play, the right attitude, trusting each other, owning your mistakes, and putting in the work even when it’s hard.
The message stayed consistent and simple: play with confidence, bring the energy, be tough, communicate, and never let a teammate stay down—you pick him up.
You won’t always control the outcome, but you always control how you show up. Do you give your best? Do you stay accountable? Do you fight for the people next to you?
That’s what matters.
Those aren’t just basketball lessons, those are life lessons.”
And this team lived it—every practice, every game, every moment.
To this group of boys—thank you for the fight, the brotherhood, and the unforgettable run. You showed what it means to compete the right way. ❤️💙

🏀 Boys 8B – Battling Every Night 🏀
This Boys 8B team took on a challenge all season long—and never backed down.
Playing as a B team in Division 3, they went up against many A teams from surrounding towns, and time after time, they proved they belonged. Most games were tight battles, with this group competing until the final whistle.
And when the moment called for it?
They delivered.
With multiple buzzer-beating wins, this team created some unforgettable moments—games that had the gym buzzing and showed just how much heart they played with.
But more than anything, this team was defined by their commitment.
As Coach Shawn Kelly shared:
“The Boys 8B team was an absolute pleasure to coach this season, particularly as this group of young men makes the transition from Natick Youth Basketball to high school in the coming months. I will always remember this team as truly dedicated and committed, showing up to each practice and game ready to put in the work. I’m sure they will each do great things on whichever path they choose, and I hope to be there cheering them on!”
To this group of boys—thank you for your effort, your toughness, and the way you competed all season long. The next chapter is just beginning. ❤️💙

🏀 Girls 8A – Doing the Little Things 🏀
This Girls 8A team showed what it means to grow, compete, and stay connected from start to finish.
Finishing the season 6–5 in league play, this group battled every night—earning big wins, learning through tough matchups, and continuing to improve each time they stepped on the court.
And when the playoffs arrived, they were ready.
The girls powered through a first-round playoff win and advanced to the second round, proving just how much they had grown as a team over the course of the season.
But this team was about more than just results.
As Coaches Dave Hava, Kristen, and Kevin shared:
“One year, two years, five years — however long we had together, this group was special.
We had the privilege of coaching a team that bought into the little things—defense, rebounding, and playing together (even after hearing ‘box out’ more times than they wanted).
More than anything, they were a supportive, encouraging group of young women who always showed up ready to work, compete, and lift each other up.
They listened, adjusted, and improved every time we stepped on the court—and learned they can do hard things.
We didn’t win it all, but success isn’t always measured that way.
They made us look forward to every practice, put smiles on our faces more times than we can count, and reminded us why we love coaching.
We’re grateful for this special group.”
To this team—thank you for the effort, the attitude, and the way you showed up for each other all season long. ❤️💙

🏀 Boys 8A – Built Together 🏀
This Boys 8A group was defined by something you can’t always teach—chemistry.
Finishing the season 6–4 in league play, this team competed hard every night, battled through a strong schedule, and continued to grow with each game. Whether it was big wins or tight matchups, they showed resilience and a commitment to getting better together.
But what really stood out was how connected they were—always supporting one another, always in it together.
That connection showed in the way they played… and in the moments they created all season long.
As Coach DeMaio shared:
“My favorite thing about this team was how well they got along. They put in a lot of hard work together over the years—it’s fun to think of them together at HS next year.”
And that’s what makes this group special—it’s not just about this season, it’s about the years they’ve put in side by side, and the fact that their story isn’t over yet.
To this team—thank you for the effort, the teamwork, and the bond you built along the way. The next chapter together is just getting started. ❤️💙
